Demography and population dynamics of mountain nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni) before its population crash in 1991 in the bale mountains national park, Ethiopia

This study was conducted to assess demography and dynamics of mountain nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni) in relation to habitats/vegetation, slope, seasons, altitude. The data were collected in 1984 eight years before population crash of T. buxtoni in 1991 in Bale Mountains National Park. Sample total count method was used to survey the population in three sites where the species known to be abundant in the northern part of the Park.

SSR marker based genetic diversity in sugarcane varieties (lines) developed in Guangxi, China

It is important to identify the genetic diversity amongst sugarcane genetic resources for cultivar development and evaluation of sugarcane varieties. The genetic diversities of 125 sugarcane varieties including 117 varieties (lines) developed in Guangxi (China) and 8 others were studied using 10 SSR markers. The results showed amplification of total 110 bands ranged from 90 to 350 bp in size. The number of bands per locus ranged from 7-14, when scoring was restricted to strongly amplified fragments, and averaged 10.5 polymorphic bands per locus.

Mining our lives out: A food security approach to mining operation in Asutifi District of Ghana

Mining in the Asutifi district began in 2003 when Newmont Gold mining (GH) Limited started mining gold. Antidiabetic activity of Strobilanthes ciliatus in streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced experimental diabetic rats

The primary objective of this study was to determine the anti-diabetic activity of Strobilanthes ciliatus in streptozotocin-nicotinamide induced diabetic rats In the present study the antidiabetic effects produced by the aqueous and alcoholic extract of whole plant of Strobilanthes ciliatus were investigated in the Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide induced experimental diabetic model. The alcoholic extract showed significant reduction in blood sugar level when compared with normal rats (p<0.05). This investigation demonstrates significant antidiabetic activity of Strobilanthes ciliates.

Plagiarism: A plague to research

In the 1st century, the use of the Latin word plagiarius (literally kidnapper), to denote someone stealing someone else's work, was pioneered by Roman poet Martial, who complained that another poet had "kidnapped his verses." This use of the word was introduced into English in 1601 by dramatist Ben Jonson, to describe as a plagiary someone guilty of literary theft. Plagirism means taking the words and thoughts of others (their ideas, concepts, images, sentences) and using them as if they were own, without crediting the author or citing the source.

The enigma of myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome

Introduction: Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome (MPDS) is one of the most common and important cause of the orofacial pain. Patients with temporomandibular joint and muscle pain gradually learn to live with the symptoms although they have been exposed to a variety of treatments. In some instances the symptoms have been aggravated by the treatment, while other patients have recovered without treatment. Masticatory muscle fatigue and spasm are responsible for the cardinal symptoms of pain, tenderness, clicking, and limited function that characterize the MPD Syndrome.

Early psychosocial impact and functional level following major lower limb amputations

Major lower limb amputations have psychological and functional implications. The goal of this study was to assess psychological impact and functional outcome and of major lower limb. This was a prospective study. Patients who consented to the study were recruited from the emergency department of the Hospital or at the out-patient clinic. The psycho-social impact was assessed at 2-weeks post operation using the Hospital Anxiety Depression scale score. Functional level was assessed using the classification as proposed by Narang et al, at 6-months post-operation.

Consistent condom utilisation and associated factors among people living with HIV/AIDS in Mekele Hospital, Tigray, North Ethiopia

Background: The introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has sharply decreased morbidity and mortality rates among HIV infected patients. Due to this, more and more people with HIV live longer and healthier lives. Yet if they practice sex without condom, those with high viral load have the potential to infect their sero-negative sexual partner or at risk of acquiring drug resistant viral strains from their sexual partner who are already infected.
