Screening of mulberry germplasm for reaction to sucking pests

The experiment was conducted in the five years old mulberry germplasms maintained at Sericulture Department. The study was conducted in all three seasons of the year 2010-2011 viz., pre monsoon (March-June), monsoon (July-Oct) and post–monsoon (November– February). The two sucking pests were selected for the study namely Pink mealy bug, Meconellicoccus hirsutus Green and Thrips, Pseudodendro thrips mori (NIWA). Score Index was followed to categorize the genotypes for various level of pest infestation. During pre-monsoon season (March – June), infestation of sucking pest, Pink mealy bug, M.

Eurihaline microalgae - a novel substance against post operative pathogen

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of two saltpan microalgae Amphora sp and Oscillatoria sp against post operative pathogens Methods: Samples of microalgae were collected from the puthalam solar saltpan of Kanyakumari district. Two microalgae Amphora sp and Oscillatoria sp were identified and isolated by serial dilution method. Biomass was produced by culturing the isolated strains in one litre of Walne’s medium. The activity was assessed by using ethanol and petroleum ether solvents.

The educational problems of farmers in India

Microbiology of goat’s milk in Brazil semiarid

This work was developed in the semiarid region of São José da Tapera, in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, in order to assess the quality of goat milk in two communities: Settlement Mocambo and Settlement Selma Bandeira. Milk were analyzed in 74 goats that survive under extensive management in the Caatinga. All animals were Brown Alpine breed. Microbiological analyzes were performed at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Veterinary School of the Federal University of Alagoas.

QTL mapping in crop plants: Principles and applications

Many agriculturally important traits such as yield, quality and some form of disease resistance are controlled by many genes (poly genes) and are known as quantitative traits. Identification of the genomic region containing few or more genes controlling these complex traits is a basic idea of QTL mapping. The large number of QTL mapping studies for diverse crop species has provided an abundance of DNA marker-trait associations. The information obtained on the QTL analysis can be utilized for the crop improvement through marker aided selection and molecular breeding.

Impact of cypermethrin on some haematological parameters in a fresh water fish, Cyprinus carpio L.

The present investigation was concluded to evaluate the lethality of cypermetrhin on common carp, Cyprinus carpio. The effect was assessed on the basis of 10,20 and 30 days exposure of its sublethal concentrations (1/5th (0.02 mg/L) and 1/10th (0.01mg/L) on some hematological parameters. Fish were sampled at 10, 20 and 30 days to test for blood analysis. There was most of the blood parameters measured such as hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV) and MCHC was significantly decreased (p< 0.05), but the WBC levels were significantly increased (p< 0.05).

Translation of the cultural images in the analects

The Analects of Confucius is the representative work of Confucianism. Covering a wide scope of subjects from politics, philosophy, literature and art to education and moral cultivation, The Analects of Confucius has a tremendous influence on Chinese and Western thought and values. This paper attempts to explore how the cultural value of Confucianism is transmitted to western countries through a comparative analysis of the translation of the key images in two English versions translated by James Legge and Ku Hungming respectively.

Socio-economic determinants of food security among households in borno state, nigeria: probit regression model approach

This study examined the determinants of household food security in Borno State. Multistage simple random sampling procedure was used in the drawing of sample. Structured questionnaires and focus groups discussions were used in collecting data for the study. Data were collected from 500 households in 18 villages in six Local Government Areas, of the region between 2008 and 2009. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic and probit regression model.

Trends, growth and variability of Bengal gram in Andhra Pradesh

The main objectives of the study are to examine the trends in area, production and productivity of Bengal gram in Andhra Pradesh over a period of 1987-88 to 2006-2007. Compound growth rates of area, production and productivity were estimated by fitting semi log trend equation. Decomposition of output growth of groundnut was examined by fitting component analysis model. The compound growth rates of area production and productivity of Bengal gram over the period shows positively significant. The study also confirms the magnitude of variability in production of Bengal gram.

Biofuel crop production and large scale land acquisition in Ghana: Implications for land-use planning

Growing concerns of meeting the energy demands and parallel pursue of sustainable development in Ghana have shifted attention to renewable energy sources including biofuel. Land-based investments are therefore increasingly becoming attractive in Ghana and, over the years, many foreign direct investments have acquired large parcels of land for biofuel crop production. However, the current system of planning in Ghana is not ready to the remits of sustainable development from energy perspective and landscape approach evidenced by the lack of policy and institutional arrangement.
