Early detection of fungal pathogens in patients with immunodeficiency involving a novel biosensor technology

Oportunistic fungi such as Candida spp. and Aspergillus spp. are responsible for development of invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) in cancer patients and patients undergoing stem cell or solid organ transplantation, and are one of the most often causes of mortality in immunodeficient patients. Early fungal pathogen detection is prerequisite for fast intervention and adequate therapy administration. Fast pathogen differentiation between fungi, bacteria or even viral infections is highly required.

‘Tripple test score’ – a reliable and accurate means of rapid diagnosis of breast lumps

Introduction: In Breast cancer there is paradigm shift towards its prevention and early detection. Currently a combination of three tests, i.e. physical examination(PE), sonomammography (MM) and Fine needle aspiration cytology/biopsy (FNAC) called as triple assessment test, is used as Gold standard in diagnosing all palpable breast lumps. Materials and Methods This study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery, Government Medical College, Nagpur, spanning 2 years from June 2015 to November 2017. A total of 100 patients with a palpable breast lump of age≥35years were evaluated.

Epidemiological profile ofpatients with amputation due todiabetic foot

Objective: To characterize the clinical profile of patients with diabetic foot amputation. Materials andMethods: Exploratory, descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, carried out in a public hospital in Campina Grande - PB, with a sample of 208 medical records of patients with amputation due to diabetic foot. Descriptive statistics of relative and absolute frequency, Pearson's Chi-square association test or Fisher's exact test, Poisson regressions and prevalence ratio were used.

Acute hepatic encephalopathy: analysis of imaging finding in a 15-year-old patient

Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome due to severe liver failure. The clinical presentation is variable. MRI have a critical role in the diagnosis confirmation and understanding the neural mechanism of this disorder. We report the case of a 15-year-old patient, who is followed up for liver cirrhosis and who presents an acute hepatic encephalopathy quickly diagnosed with MRI.

Use of oral contraceptive decrease adiponectin plasma levels?

Adiponectin (APN) is the most abundant polypeptide produced by adipose tissue in humans. It has an important anti-atherogenic role, suppresses the expression of proinflammatory substances and increases the production of nitric oxide, protecting against most diseases related to the inflammatory process, such as atherosclerosis. On the other hand, observational studies indicate that the use of low-dose combined oral contraceptives (COC) is associated with increased subclinical inflammation.
