Environmental and socio–economic impacts analysis of rainwater harvesting in Rwanda. A case of Kagarama Sector, Kicukiro District

Learning to manage rain water means succeeding in mastering not only water scarcity but also excess and supplying water for agriculture, hygiene thus maintaining the quality of environment and improving socio-economic conditions. However, even if Kagarama sector located in Kicukiro districts in Rwanda has two rainfall seasons which serves as the ample water resources. Kagarama sector is still affected by low per capita water availability in summer days and water excess in rain season both leading to problems related to socio-economic activities and environment.

In vitro dissolution studies and pharmaceutical equivalence assessment of metformin hydrochloride tablets commercially available in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Metformin is a drug widely used in worldwide for type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the dissolution profiles of Metforminhydrocloride tablets (850 mg) available as the reference drug (R), generic (G) and similar (S) commercialized in Bahia, Brazil using a simple, fast and low cost ultraviolet spectrophotometric method. The tests were performed in compliance with the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and United States Pharmacopeias. The proposed methodology for quantifying the drug was validated presenting precision, linearity and accuracy.

Considerations for the interpretation of biochemical profiles in non-infectious abortions cows

Objective: Abortion in a dairy herd is a factor that impact the company’s productivity. It is important to provide epidemiological surveillance tools that help anticipate herd reproductive losses in order to correct those through management measures, infectious disease control and proper nutritional management. The analysis of biochemical profiles as a preventive medicine tool is useful to detect metabolic imbalances that can be part of the causality of non-infectious abortions.

Estimation of carbon footprint of tea products at nyabihu tea factory, Western Province-Rwanda

The carbon footprint arose out of the debate on climate change, as a tool to measure GHG emissions. This research carried out at Nyabihu tea factory for carbon footprint estimation in tea life cycle was focusing on different key processes and phases or steps through which Nyabihu tea passes until it is delivered to the auction site (Mombasa). Data collection involved: (1) questionnaire survey to assess the life cycle of tea for Nyabihu tea, (2) field observation and measurements (forests and tea plantations), and (3) personnel interview.

User pre-emerging herbicides associated with irrigation interval in the control of Momordica charantia L

Weeds impair the productive efficiency of agricultural crops, a species that has shown an increase in occurrence is the melon-de-são-caetano (Momordica charantia L.), and this causes losses due to competition for water, light, nutrients and space. Therefore, a treatment with an effective herbicide to control this species is of utmost importance for the reduction of the damage caused. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate different herbicide molecules associated with irrigation intervals in the control of são caetano melon (Mormodica charantia L.).

Prosopis cineraria (ghaf): a potential desert nutraceutical

Prosopis cineraria (Ghaf) is considered as one of the highly valued trees in many arid and dry areas in the world. Historically, this tree has drag attention for its various uses therefore, in 2008, it was declared the national tree of the UAE not only for its sustainability through low water consumption and its ability to maintain desert ecosystems, but also for its many cultural uses. Ancient literature from Arabian Gulf and Indian desert illustrated the importance of the tree in treated various ailments like asthma, dysentery, leucoderma, leprosy, dyspepsia, earache, etc. The P.

Agroindustrial technology in Brazilian awakening to craft beers

The Brazilian brewery sector has significantly grown in the past few years due to recent developments from microbreweries and mid-scale craft beer manufacturers. Despite the slightly higher end-product cost, the diversity and improved quality are perceived as an acceptable trade-off by customers. The contemporary Brazilian scenario contrasts with the legacy mainstream beer producers that prevailed in market-share until late 90s with no competitors. In this article, we present a brief introduction of the beer history worldwide and its current state in Brazil.

Hydraulic characterization of domestic taps

This work was conductedwith the objective of determining the discharge coefficient values and the characteristic curves (flow-pressure ratio) of two models of metallic silver and bronze domestic taps, with commercial diameters of ¾ and ½ inch. Each tap was subjected to 5 pre-established hydraulic loads (ranging from 2 to 30 m). Flow and discharge coefficient values differ between faucet models. The average flow rate of silver and bronze taps is 37.08 and 18.91 L min-1, respectively. The silver tap has a higher flow rate diameter inches (39.10 L min-1).

Sensory and microbiological quality of guava jam with added concentrated grape juice

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological and sensorial quality of guava jam functionalized by the addition of concentrated grape juice. Two formulations were prepared: guava jam enriched by the addition of concentrated grape juice in the proportion of 30% (w/w) (SF), with sucrose, and guava jam enriched by the addition of concentrated grape with no added sugar (DF), in which sucrose was replaced by a commercial blend of sweeteners.
