The physico-chemical and microbiological analysis of borehole water samples in Ogun state college of health technology, Ilese-Ijebu

In Ijebu-ode, borehole water is the most reliable and readily available source of water to the various households. Though, borehole water (groundwater) quality can be satisfactorily well but a poor siting and management of a borehole can pose potential risks to consumers. For instance, lack of observing maximum distances from source of contamination, poor sanitation and waste management will eventually directly or indirectly contaminate the water and the consumers’ health is being jeopardised.

Management of severely resorbed maxillary ridge with a modified light-weight hollow complete denture and monoplane teeth: - a case report

Retention, stability and support are the basic principles on which the success of a complete denture relies on. The skill lies in applying these principles efficiently in critical situations. Extreme resorption in one or both of the residual alveolar ridges accompanied by resilient maxillary denture bearing tissues in the edentulous patient presents a difficult restorative problem and may lead to problems with prosthetic rehabilitation.

Determinants of solid waste collection and disposal: differentials of high and low density areas of sango – OTA metropolis

Solid waste collection and disposal is a serious problem in many urban cities in Nigeria. It is further heightened by the growing populations, rapid economic growth and consumption patterns which have accelerated the generation rate of solid waste, thus making its collection and disposal a major challenges. This paper assessed the determinants of solid waste collection and disposal; differentials of high and low density areas of Sango – Ota metropolis. The descriptive research method was employed for the study.

The importance of investigating adolescents' health-related behaviours: an opportunity for improving public health

The concept of health behaviours and risk behaviours has emerged as a major issue in the population health, health promotion and epidemiology literature. Generally, ‘health behaviour’ and ‘health risk behaviour’ are terms that are often used interchangeably. It is well recognized that people’s health status and their behaviours are linked inextricably. The concept of health risk behaviour has been used to describe behaviours with potentially has negative effects on health which contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

Occurrence of antibiotic resistant enteric Escherichia coli in marketed chicken in Ibadan metropolis, Southwest Nigeria

In most developing countries including Nigeria, indiscriminate use of antibiotics in food animals could be incriminated as a critical factor leading to antimicrobial resistance. Intestines from marketed chicken in fifteen market locations in Ibadan metropolis were randomly sampled to examine for antibiotic resistant enteric bacteria to some commonly used antibiotics. Bacteriological examination of intestinal samples was done using standard methods, followed by in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity test by agar gel diffusion technique.

8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine in transitional bladder carcinoma

Objectives: As oxidative stress is known to be associated with the development of cancer, we investigated whether the tissue expression of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) which is a marker of DNA damage were increased in patients with transitional bladder carcinoma (TBC).
Design and Methods: Fifty patients with transitional bladder carcinoma (TBC) and 18 age-matched cancer –free patients were involved in this study. 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in tissue were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Antibacterial activity of papain against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175

Papain is an enzyme extracted from papaya plants (Carica papaya L), including Caricaceae family. This enzyme shows a broad proteolytic activity against the protein, short chain peptides, amino acid ester and amid, including bacterial cell wall. The purpose of this study is to produce a proper papain concentration to inhibit the growth of or kill Streptococcus mutans. The type of research is an experimental laboratory by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) with a dilution method, and measured using a microplate reader.

Adolescent health in India and development implications

Constituting more than one fifth of the country’s population, adolescents in India, as a group, have not yet received the deserved attention. This paper examines the health status of adolescents in India based on existing studies and highlights the implications for development of adolescents as well as for national development. It has a special focus on some of the neglected aspects of adolescent health: nutritional situation, substance use and mental health.
