Successful integration of transplanted mesenchymal stem cells into the livers of Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice

One of the most serious consequences of Schistosoma (S.) mansoni infection is hepatic schistosomiasis or periportal fibrosis. Treatment with praziquantel (PZQ) remains the mainstay of schistosomiasis control. Stem cells and their possible use in cell therapy have drawn much attention recently, due to their potential for self-renewal and differentiation. The present study aimed to investigate the ability of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UMSCs) to integrate into the livers of S. mansoni-infected mice. S.

Assessment of knowledge of accredited social health activists (ASHA) reAssessment of knowledge of accredited social health activists (ASHA) regarding their roles and responsibilities under NRHM in rural Karnataka

Introduction: A new initiative in the Indian health care system by introducing Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) made a remarkable impact in utilization of healthcare services at the peripheral level. This study was conducted with the objectives to assess the knowledge of ASHA workers on their roles and responsibilities as an ASHA workers.

Woody plant diversity along disturbance gradients in the northern afro-montane forests of the bale mountains, Ethiopia

The effects of human disturbances on woody plant species diversity was assessed by comparing species richness, Shannon diversity and evenness, population abundance and composition along three disturbance gradients in the northern Bale Mountains, Ethiopia. Data on woody plant species were collected in six forest patches along three levels of disturbances in 20 by 20 m-2 quadrates in each forest patches.

Phytochemical analysis in different solvent extracts of padina tetrastromatica

The phytochemical constituents of the aqueous, acetone and methanol extracts of Padina tetrastromatica were studied. The qualitative analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, tannin, phenols, saponins, terpenoids and flavonoids. The methanol extract of Padina  tetrastromatica, was used for quantitative estimation of alkaloid, tannin, flavanoid, phenol, Chlorophyll, Protein and Carbohydrate.

Qualitative phytochemical screening in different solvents of rauwolfia serpentina (Linn.) Benth., ex Kurz. stem

Indian medicinal plant (Rauwolfia serpentina (Linn.) were analyzed for their phytochemical constituents. The results revealed the presence of bioactive constituents comprising carbohydrate, glycosides, steroids, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponin and triterpenes. Rauwolfia serpentina (Linn.) is a good source of glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and triterpenes. Hence it is used for the extraction of useful drugs.

Isolation of protein from cell free culture filtrate: A noble approach

Bacteria are well known for their ability to liberate proteins and enzymes into their environment. Pseudomonad sp. being important micro-organisms produces wide range of extra-cellular enzymes including proteases. The pseudomonad strains R62 and R81 has been used in this study for electrophoresis analysis of extracellular protease enzymes which were present in the cell free culture of nutrient broth (NB) and protease specific broth (PB) media.

Characterization of a new Al3+-selective fluorescent probe based on naphthalene derivative

A new compound derived from naphthalene was successfully characterized as Al3+-selective fluorescent probe. The proposed probe has better selectivity and sensitivity compared to other tested metal ions. A prominent fluorescence enhancement was observed in the presence of Al3+, accompanied by the change in the absorption spectrum.

Prevalence and causes of infertility among women of Jammu and Kashmir

The problem of infertility has not given its due attention in India because it is not a life threatening condition. Infertility is a life crisis with invisible losses and its consequences are manifold. The study was done to find out the prevalence and causes of infertility in ethnic population of J and K. The study was carried out in the hospital settings. The finding of the study Indicates that Jammu region shows highest prevalence of infertility rate followed by Kashmir region, where as Ladakh region shows the lowest prevalence.

Reduction of erythema after laser on rosacea by subthermal 448 khz monopolar radiofrequency

Excellent results are usually obtained when facial benign vascular alterations such as erythrosis and couperosis are treated with vascular laser (pulsed dye, KTP, Neodimiun-YAG) or with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). However, the erythema occurring at hours or days after such treatment may hamper the patients’ ability to go back to their daily lives and increase the risk of adverse effects. The 448 kHz capacitive/resistive monopolar radiofrequency system is based on the subthermal electrical stimulation of tissues, enabling the restoration of ionic balance at cell level.
