Toxic India ---treat the patient and not the poison

The subtle effect of Thalidomide tragedy resulting in phocomalia, apoda etc in the offspring led to untold miseries. The drug Thalidomide caused an estimated 10,000 birth defects and thousands of fetal deaths worldwide. The affected babies typically suffered from phocomelia, a failure of the limbs to develop. These unfortunate babies were cruelly referred to as "Flipper babies". This drug formerly used as a sedative, but with drawn in the early 1960's after it was found to cause congenital malformation or absence of limbs in children whose mothers took the drug during early pregnancy.

Oral mucocele: A Case Report

Mucocele is a common lesion of the oral mucosa that results from an alteration of minor salivary glands due to a mucous accumulation causing limited swelling. Two histological types exist - extravasation and retention. Clinically they consist of a soft, bluish and transparent cystic swelling. This report presents aneight year old female patient having mucocele on lower lip. Treatment performed was surgical removal as she suffered difficulty in mastication & speech.

Impact of the extent of craniectomy and duraplasty on post-operative outcome following decompressive craniectomy for traumatic brain injury

Aim: To evaluate the impact of the size of decompressive craniectomy and duraplasty on the post operative outcome following decompressive craniectomy for traumatic brain injury. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted at Institute of Neurosurgery, Madras Medical College. 136 patients, who underwent decompressive craniectomy for moderate and severe brain injury were included in the study. CT scan of brain showed Acute SDH, unilobar or multilobar contusions with diffuse cerebral edema, midline shift >5mm, and effacement of basal cisterns.

Isolated left sided diaphragmic injury due to blunt trauma

Diaphragmatic injury presents as acute emergency and associated with other life threatening injury of other organs. Sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure may cause injury in the membranous or muscular part of the diaphragm. Early diagnosis is the most important step in the management. Delayed diagnosis can result in a diaphragmatic hernia with high mortality, morbidity and high mortality rate due to complications such as strangulation and incarceration. X-Ray abdomen and chest will be guide for identifying most of the diaphragmatic injury in emergency.

Arterial hypertension in the worsening clinical condition of dengue

The purpose of the manuscript was to identify the presence of comorbidities that enhances the worsening of dengue disease. It is a case-control study, carried out in the city of Campo Grande, Brazil. Subjects were matched by gender, age and place of residence, using four controls for each case. A hundred and two subjects with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) were included in the case group, and 408 subjects with a diagnosis of dengue fever were selected as the control group.

Non-rigid attachment to break the stress on pier abutment: a case report

A most common clinical situation is presented with missing first premolar and first molar, resulting in FPD design in which the canine and the second molar act as terminal abutments and second premolar act as a pier abutment. In such case there is a tendency of terminal abutments to intrude during function results in a teetering movement, where the pier abutment act as a fulcrum. These movements will eventually lead to debonding of less retentive terminal retainer.

The feast of the new yam is the most important feast of the Igbo world. It is solemnized after the cleansing ceremonies. The pantheon of feasts is like the one of divinities. There is a big feast and secondary ones. The end of small feasts symbolizes the start of the feast of the new yam. In Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God, divinities, spirits, the dead and the living are around during the feast. They play significant parts in the different rituals of the feast. The ritual of yam is performed to meet cultural and political needs.

The effect of strength training in subjects diagnosed with HIV/AIDS

The present study presents the effect of strength training in subjects diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The first chapter addressed the action and forms of HIV transmission. The second, the definition and action of strength training in the body. In the third chapter, a broad discussion was held between the practices of strength training in individuals with HIV/AIDS. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of strength training on individuals with HIV/AIDS, taking into account evidence found in the scientific literature.
