Abstract:

The study was dedicated to analyzing the psychological implications in patients with breast cancer treated at Oncology consultations at the Central Hospital of Maputo, in the first semester of 2017 to January 2018, analyzing the various variables under study. 17 women with breast cancer participated in this study, who underwent treatment at the Central Hospital of Maputo. After informed consent was given, all patients responded to the semi-structured interview guide consisting of a demographic questionnaire. The interview was completed by the researcher in a semi-structured script with information collected from the patients' clinical process. From the quantitative and qualitative study carried out, she highlights that some women, when they were diagnosed with breast cancer, reported that they were psychologically affected, shortly after receiving the diagnosis of the disease. Some mentioned that they would not have received any psychological support in the family. Among these, some women who were married reported having received a lot of psychological support from their spouses; others explained that even in their workplace, they would have been rejected because their employer does not accept to live with this health condition, especially when they started having to attend the successive checkups. After mastectomy, some of the women have faced many difficulties in carrying out their domestic activities, even needing help; others, even as wives, suffer discrimination on the part of their spouses, as they show themselves or feel unable to perform their role as a wife. Among these, some mentioned that, living in rural areas where there was no information about breast cancer, is this one of the reasons for the lack of information about this pathology?. The nature of this disease requires a lot of attention on the part of health professionals, as well as the people around these women affected by this disease.
