Abstract:

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease with dermatoneurological manifestations. It affects both sexes and any age group and has a history of stigma and discrimination to this day. However, this disease can be cured and treated completely free of charge by the Unified Health System (SUS). The present study aims to identify and describe the epidemiological profile of patients with leprosy. This is a quantitative, time-series, retrospective, documentary-based epidemiological study carried out based on records of leprosy cases. 210 cases of leprosy patients were reported in the municipality of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais/Brazil from 2015 to 2019. The study showed a predominance of 32.4% of cases in adults aged between 50 and 64 years, 55% of the female, 37% with the borderline clinical form, 58% classified as multibacillary and 57% classified as having zero degree of disability at diagnosis. This study made it possible to describe the epidemiological and clinical profile of the disease in the municipality, and important data were revealed, which implies the need to strengthen health surveillance actions throughout the care network.
