Among the vector-borne zoonoses, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important, because, if left untreated, it can have a high mortality rate in humans. Objective: This study was conducted to assess the knowledge of individuals about VL. Methods: The research is characterized as a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory study, with a sample population of 736. A structured questionnaire was developed involving comprehensive questions related to knowledge about VL and made available through an online platform. Results: A total of 736 participated in the study individuals residing in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and female participants aged between 18 and 25 years, with incomplete higher education, stood out. Of the participants 79.8% had pets; 13.6% did not know what zoonosis is; and 27.2% did not know what VL means. Visceral leishmaniasis was confirmed to be a serious disease by 95.5%, and 21.6% of the respondents believe the disease has no cure. As regards the transmitter, 83.3% mentioned the drain fly and 79.1% indicated decomposing organic matter as its breeding site. Conclusions: The population still has knowledge deficiencies regarding VL, including practices for the prevention, control and transmission of this important and neglected zoonosis.
