Abstract:

Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the disorders that has been most detected in the health area. Due to the challenges inherent to the disorder, the role of parents and school in the development process of these individuals has been debated. Seeking to delimit this scenario, the present study sought to detect the challenges encountered in the area of psychology aimed at parents when dealing with autistic children. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the role of the family in the development of children with autism. This is a topic of enormous relevance, since these individuals have their own development and articulation, which creates a challenge for parents. In the methodology, bibliographic research was used through a narrative review of the literature. Data collection was carried out using the Scielo and PubMed and LILACS databases. Of the 36 works selected from 2017 to 2022, 25 were selected and used in this study. In the results, it was evident that there are numerous challenges that parents have when dealing with autistic children. Denial of the diagnosis, adaptation, understanding of the disorder and financial costs are some of the examples. Still in this scenario, the role of the psychologist is fundamental, as it is up to him to encourage the family in decision-making, expose all the risks and benefits, identify the potential and needs of the autistic child.
