Abstract:

Functional capacity is a measure of overall functionality that is in turn the result of the interaction of all physical and mental capacities developed during the lifetime. Functional capacity measures range from a degree of total independence to complete decision-making autonomy. Thus, the decrease in functional capacity can lead the elderly to greater vulnerability and / or propensity to fall, which can lead to loss of mobility, hospitalization and even death. Thus, the aforementioned research aims to relate the chronic effects of a resistance training program on functional autonomy, functional capacity and reduction of the risk of falls in the elderly. Methodology: the sample consisted of 33 elderly people, who underwent a 16-week resisted training program with progression of loads. The chronic effects of resistance training positively influenced the total scores of the functional autonomy and functional capacity indexes. In addition to decreasing the risk of falls to 27.2%, this way we conclude that physical activity promotes a protective effect to decrease the risk of falls, since they improve physical capacities and functional autonomy. Several studies have already contacted its efficiency and made it protective.
