Climate-related challenges facing crop farmers in uasin gishu county, Kenya

Crop production is highly sensitive to climate variability. It is affected by changes in average rainfall and temperature, and extreme weather events. Climate change can cause disruption in food availability, reduce access to food, andquality.This study sought to establish climate-related challenges facing crop farmers in Uasin Gishu County, in Kenya. The authors collected survey data from 353 crop farmers in a region considered the breadbasket of Kenya. They analyzed data using Chi square and summarized it in frequencies and percentages. The findings of the study indicate that plant diseases (0.215), pests (0.751), weeds (0.099), increased rainfall (0.192), prolonged drought (0.981) increased flooding (0.251), increased soil erosion (0.733) and overlap of rainfall (0.537) affect farmers. Frost (0.041) and changes in onset of rains (0.008) did not pose significant challenges to the farmers.
