Introduction: The discussion about the importance of mental health for the LGBT+ population is in the light of the expanded concept of health and interacts with the doctrinal principles of universality, integrality and equity of the Unified Health System (SUS). The health of the LGBT+ population has particularities and vulnerabilities that demand differentiated attention and much has been focused on issues involving the mental health of this population. Objective: to analyze the mental health of the LGBTQIA+ population in light of Abraham Maslow's Theory of Human Motivation. Methodology: this is a reflective theoretical study with a qualitative approach based on the theoretical framework of Abraham Maslow's Theory of Human Motivation. Results: the study points to reflections on public policies that address the lgbtqia+ population, vulnerability of the lgbtqia+ population, nursing contributions and the role of nurses in relation to lgbtqia+ health. Conclusion: The present study did not intend to exhaust the knowledge on the subject. The reflection pointed out here suggests that the mental health of the LGBTQIA+ population is affected at all five hierarchical levels according to Maslow.
