Absenteeism is a strategic indicator for workforce management. In the hospital environment, unhealthy factors were potentiated in 2020, due to actions to face the pandemic by COVID-19. This article aimed to analyze the behavior of the absenteeism rate motivated by sick leave in the period 2019-2021, in two public hospitals in the State of Minas Gerais-Brazil. The method used was the descriptive time series, with quantitative analysis of institutional records. Nonparametric statistical tests were performed to compare annual rates. The results show that the rate of absenteeism motivated by sick leave showed a growth of 56.73%, in the comparison of 2019/2020. It was observed that the difference between the value obtained in 2019 and 2020 was statistically significant, confirming the hypothesis of the study. The professional categories with the highest rates were Nursing and Medicine, and the hospital sectors were the Infirmary e Emergency Room. The results of this research provide subsidies for health organizations to reflect on the health of workers and seek solutions for the recovery of those who fall ill, as well as for the overload of the team that remains present in the field.
