Emerging role of ICT in Indian agriculture

India's agriculture sector continues to be the lifeline of its people and a key factor in the economy's overall productivity. Agriculture is an important part of India's economy and at present it is among the top two farm producers in the world. This sector provides approximately 52 percent of the total number of jobs available in India and contributes around 17.32 percent to the GDP. Agriculture is the only means of living for almost two-thirds of the employed class in India. This paper analyses the dynamics of digital transformation of the Indian agricultural system and major drivers of transformation, giving an overview of the past achievements and the future challenges in Indian agriculture to be strategically dealed with to accelerate sustainable broad-based growth in the agriculture sector in the country.
