Abstract:

Emissions of pollutants from the atmosphere, whether from artificial or natural sources, fixed or mobile, should be reduced and controlled to ensure satisfactory air quality for population well-being and ecological balance (Semarnat, 2014). Work on the diagnosis of air pollution is of prime importance for the selection and implementation of measures to ensure an adequate harmony between the various activities carried out in a territory in such a way that the environment is not harmed and be compatible the different Socio-economic activities (Cuesta et al., 2006). In this work, the concentration of total suspended particles (PST) was measured by a high-volume sampling equipment following the procedures established in the official Mexican standard (NOM-035-SEMARNAT-1993) and characterized the air quality of the city of Navojoa, Sonora in relation to the IMECA (Metropolitan Air Quality Index) index applying the algorithm for the transformation of daily maximum concentrations of PST to IMECAS. The results indicate that 44% of the days sampled have a value greater than or equal to 100 points IMECA, which represents an air quality not satisfactory for the study period.
