Prevention of nosocomial infections in intensive care unit: Analysis of professional knowledge

The present study aimed to analyze the knowledge of medical doctors and registered nurses on the use of Bundles and safe practices for prevention of nosocomial infections. This was an observational and descriptive study through the quantitative approach. The sample was composed of 13 healthcare providers, 4 medical doctors and 9 registered nurses who work in a Intensive Care Unit. Regarding the knowledge of Bundles, 60% of the doctors did know anything about them, plus 20% did not answer the question. In contrast, 66,7% of the nurses affirmed knowledge. Concerning to the knowledge of healthworkers about caring without infections and reliability of Nosocomial Infection Control Comittee and Patient Safety Core, 77,8% of nurses and 100% of doctors agreed that the ICU is the most likely place to the development of nosocomial infections. With regard to practices associated to the nosocomial infections prevention, this study demonstrated that healthworkers recognized that these ensure high levels of quality in the healthcare delivery.
