Objective: To compare the utilization of the manual method used to document the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement to the proposal of a computerized software tool to record the process in the hospital. Method: This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach, carried out through the application of a score scale to six certified nurses in PICC introduction, who also were working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a maternal-child care reference hospital. The survey was conducted from January to December 2016, in a maternal-child care reference hospital. The data were submitted to quantitative analysis using the software Bioestat 5.3. Results: Both methods proved to have advantages and disadvantages. The computerized method presented the most advantages, and among them, it is highlithed the time to fill out the data related to PICC handling, the security for information storage and the easiness to generate statistics and reports about the procedure. Conclusion: The use of the computerized method proved to be effective for the work process and for a better management of the data about PICC in health care and it also enhances the communication generated in the reports, in order to improve the safety of newborns.
