Contributing to the 2030 global sustainable development agenda: the experience of the south-south trilateral cooperation Initiative +Cotton

The crisis experienced by the cotton sector worldwide during the 90s, affected the livelihoods of thousands of family farming in Latin America. In the post crisis context, the South-South Trilateral + Cotton Cooperation Initiative was born as part of the Brazil-FAO program, whose objective is to revitalize the family farming cotton sectorin Latin America. This article analyzes the contribution of the+Cotton Project into achieving the 2030 sustainable development goals. Through a desk review and analysis of documents generated by the project during its seven years of execution, this document shows how the regional initiative is contributing positively to the scope of 8 of the 17 SDGs 2030. To do so, the project approach focus on addressing the complexity of the problems faced by the sector promoting the sustainability of diversified production systems, strengthening rural extension services, soil recovery, reducing the use of chemicals, promoting gender equality, efficiency in the use of water and promoting alliances for the development, based on an innovative methodology of South-South Trilateral cooperation.
