Abstract:

Background: Child adoption for infertile couples is considered a taboo in some communities in developing countries. The descriptive study was aimed at determining factors associated with acceptability of child adoption as a management option for infertility among women in Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State. Method: Structured questionnaire were given to 400 females of child bearing age (18 and above) who were willing to participate in the study. These questionnaires were retrieved by the authors as soon as they were filled. Information obtained included demographic data, awareness of child adoption as a management strategy for infertility, and factors associated with the acceptability of child adoption. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequencies and simple percentages. Result: Findings indicated that there was high level of awareness (95% ; 380) on child adoption. There was also a high level of willingness (93%; 375) to recommend child adoption for infertile couples but lack of awareness of adoption centers ( 150; 37.5) was found to be the highest factor associated with child adoption as a management strategy for infertile couples. Other associated factors were traditional belief (100; 25%), cost of adoption (100; 25%), and stigmatization was the lowest (50; 12.5%) factor associated with acceptability of child adoption as a management option for infertility. Conclusion: The awareness of child adoption as a management option for infertility among females of Yenagoa metropolis may be high but factors like knowledge of locations of adoption centers (Orphanages), cost of adoption, traditional belief and stigmatization are associated with acceptability of child adoption as a management option for infertility. Measures like advocacy and mobilization against stigmatization of adopted children and parents, and reduction on price of child adoption will enhance the acceptability of child adoption as a management option for infertility among women in Yenagoa Metropolis.
