Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of the essential oil of Aloysia lycioides Cham, as well as to evaluate the antifungal, cytotoxic and modulatory activity of this oil against Candida species. The oil, analyzed by Multidimensional Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry had its antifungal activity determined for 12 Candida species according with Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Its cytotoxic effect was determined by MTT and hemolytic methods and its modulatory activity was established for fluconazole using strains that obtained minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ≤ 0.51mg/ml. The oil obtained a yield of 0.82% (m/m) and the main constituents identified were β-myrcene, pinocophone and guaiol. The oil analyzed inhibited the growth of the12 species tested, with MICs ranging from 0.51 to 0.26 mg/ml. None significant cytotoxic effect was observed and the oil presented synergism with fluconazole for all tested species, except for Candida metapsilosis. In conclusion, the essential oil of the Aloysia lycioides demonstrated in vitro efficacy against all the Candida isolates tested and proved to be a good modulator from fluconazole.
